Fire in the Radisson

June 15th, 2008 by Commissioner

Saturday night provided memories some will never forget.  Around 1900 hrs the first alarm was struck for a fire in the Radison Hotel in East Pennsboro Township.  All 5 East Pennsboro Departments were due plus Engine 2-13 and Camp Hill Truck 14.  Engine 2-13 was first in with a crew of 8, followed by two East Penn Units.  Upon arrival there was fire from the roof.  Engine 2-13 layed in a supply line with crews from 13 and 21 (Creekside) advancing the initial lines in to the structure.  Crews encountered smoke conditions on both floors and worked to knock the fire on the second floor in the ceiling of several rooms.  The incident progessed to three alarms.  Manpower was tasked with extensive overhaul in warm weather conditions.

What was so unforgettable about this incident?  Multple groups from out of town were staying at the hotel for local youth sporting activities.  There were wedding receptions held in attached buildings that were affected by the power being cut off to the area.  Those at the wedding receptions spent several hours outside watching the activity of the firefighters.  There were several pieces of apparatus staged in the area of the receptions and were used for photo opportunities by the guests and wedding parties.
